Fear of Masked/Costumes characters

AJ is petrified of anyone in a mask or costume.  We were up the mall today to run an errand and AJ saw the bunny and flipped.  We were easily 30 ft away and he still had a 30 minute meltdown.  Anytime we go anywhere where there might be a costumed character I get anxious that AJ will freak out.  Any suggestions?

Please excuse my typos. I baby wear at the computer and I have to type around a bobbing head.

I'm so sorry.  I don't have any experience with this, but here's a bump

Avoid the characters.  My 15 year old is still afraid of them as well (and she's NT, not special needs) so we just do our best to avoid them.

My first son did that.  It was just a phase.  It will probably pass.  You might try telling him what the creature is and explaining why it isn't scary.
