Jeremiahs preschool had the Lions club come and do eye exams today. Which I think is awesome. Anyway, we'd been suspecting Jeremiah had a lazy eye for a while and they confirmed it today. Problem is that all pediatric eye doctors are going to be at least an hour drive one way for us. When we went through this with Zack, we had to drive 2 hours one way. He has Medicaid so his care is covered, but we cannot afford the gas. Its always something else. I'm getting so stressed. I try not to, but it just piles on. I'm wondering about calling SSI and letting them know about it. Maybe it will help our application.

I'm so sorry. I would definitely call and let them know. Hopefully you hear back soon.

Does your medicaid not have any options for transportation?

I've never been in a position where we couldn't afford gas, but I know that when DS was on medicaid for a little while, there was a way we could request a shuttle.

Nope. We live out in the country so we have a good drive for just about everything. Our ot is a 2 hour drive round trip and that's twice a week. And Jeremiah goes to children's every couple of months and that's 2.5 hours one way. Right now we have mortgage on our old house and rent on the one we're in so money is nonexistent right now. Just bad timing

I know medicaid helps with transportation. You can call them up and they will provide a ride.

Are you sure you're asking the right people?

I live an hour outside our metro area too.  We do have a GP in our little town, but ALL the specialists are in the city.  I know I see medical transport shuttles driving people all the time.

It could differ by state, but I think I'd start calling around to various people and organizations.  Have you tried asking any non-profits like Easter Seals?  Maybe even ask the SSI people if they know of any services.

I've asked Medicaid before and they've told me we dont qualify for that kind of assistance. Here our Medicaid is split by income. We're in the upper income bracket so we don't get all services covered. Yeah, it sucks. That wonderful gap between not able to do it without help and make too much for help. Once we get the housing situation figured out it'll be better. But SSI would help a ton!

1 mom liked this

Contact the Lions directly. They often go that extra step where vision is concerned. My dad is a member so we were able to get them to cover the $500 for my dd's glasses. Worth a shot anyway.

I'll ask. Turns out one of their members is a member of our church. I had no idea lol. I'll talk to him Sunday. The eye care itself will be covered, its just the transportation costs that will kill us.
