Are there special Preemie Car Seats?

Sometimes my dreams bring on the strangest questions.....

Do they make special preemie car seats? If not, what do you do to get a very tiny baby home?

I know a lot of the reallly small babies have to stay in the hospital for while but even at 5 pounds a normal car seat would be too big, wouldn't it?

My DD was born at 33 weeks and came home weighing only 3 lbs 11 oz. We did have just a typical infant seat (even 16 years ago they had the detachable base kind). I remember that someone from the NICU went out to the car with DH while i finalized all the discharge paperwork and got her ready and they had us bring the seat into the NICU and they helped fit her into it and again escorted us to the car to make sure she was in correctly before we left.

It seems like I have heard something about a special kind of bassinet net-like carseat for preemies, too, but I can't recall the details since we didn't have one.

it would be expensive to have a special carseat I'm sure. But it seems like it would be safer.

Brillant idea! Maybe the hospitals could rent preemie carseats???

Brady was born weighing 5 pounds and he was less than that when we brought him home from the NICU.  We had an infant carseat that swallowed him whole but we used it!  We got an insert for it to help support him though.  Here's what we had for him:)

That's very cool. How long did you use it?

That is a brilliant idea!

We had something like Darby showed as well, but I think we got that later, maybe even for one of the boys (they were both just 5 lbs as well). My memory fails me...

They put rolled up towels around Ty when we brought him home from the nicu and he was under 5lbs when he came (under 5lbs at birth). There is a car seat bed that some have to ride in. I've never seen it but heard about it. My niece was only 3.5lbs and came home in a normal car seat too. I might have a pic somewhere of Ty

They also make some seats that have ratings as low as 3pbs but they're really expensive (around 350-450). Some hospitals make you buy the bassinet beds and some rent while others just lend. Here they rent but my friend in IN they lent her hers. Either way they usually make you do the car seat test, whether it's a 5lbs seat or a 3lb seat. Fail and it's the bed they go home in.
