Legacy of an Adopted Foster Child

(Adapted from Legacy of an Adopted Child [Author Unknown])

Once there were two sets of parents

Neither knew the other.

One you may or may not remember,

The other you call father and mother.

Two different lives, alien to each other

Shaped to make your life one.

One set became your guiding light and star,

The other became your sun and moon.

The first gave you life, for better or worse

The second taught you how to live it for the better.

The first gave you a need for love and to fear it.

The second was there to give you love and help you embrace it.

One gave you a nationality and personality to.

The other gave you a name, and a heritage

One gave you the seed of talent, but doused its flame

The other gave you purpose and an aim.

One gave you the emotions of anger, fear and shame

The other soothed your anger, calmed your fears, and gave you pride

One saw your first sweet smile, but ignored your frown

The other dried your tears and turned the frown upside down.

You were taken away from one

Because they could not or would not properly care for you

The other prayed every day for a child who needed them

And God led them straight to you.

You ask me now

Through all your tears,

The question asked by many others

Down throughout the years.

Heredity or environment, gene pool or society

Which one made you who you are?

Both, my darling and neither,

You are made from two different kinds of "love".
