We are currently restoring a historic home. My kids say its like the house on charmed. (maybe if it had been occupied by hobos for the last 10 years). We are doing a full restoration. Basically the only original part of the house will be the frame. I want to save the wood because it is beautiful carved and fits the house. If I bought new it would be $80 a board at the millworks for the custom look. Imagine that times a whole house! Everyday I work on the house 3 hours. The furnace is broken and has to be custom ordered. So it will be another week before there is heat. Every wall I pull down is filled with vermiculite or shredded newspaper. Its dirty, dusty and cold. Its a gross job but it would cost $15,000 to hire a demo crew. I would rather use that for upgrades in the house.
My husband wants to hire it done. He will not help. My whole family is coming over later today to help me but my husband is going to work on his project for grad school. Im embarassed that he is not there because im sure they are wondering why they are helping when he is too busy. Yes my husband is busy and yes we have more than enough money to pay someone to do it but I can do it better. I care about quality and detail. I wll carefully remove each board as to not damage it. I carefully vaccuum each support beam to get the vermiculite off it.
I value hard work over money and im sad to say im ashamed my husband will not dirty himself on the house. Then again I wanted a certain look to the steps down to the basement and he gave me $2000 to pay fot it. Without the money I wouldnt be able to do the house either.
Should I demand he help when other people are there or let it go and let him bankroll it?
