What this Black mother would like you to know

1.  Please don't ask me why Black people do/say this or that.  I can only speak for myself.

2.  Servers: don't assume that I won't tip you.  I am actually a very generous tipper.  If I sense an attitude from you, I'll only tip you 15-20%.  If you are a great server, you'll most likely get 50-100%.

3.  Please don't touch my hair.  Yes, it's soft and puffy, but I don't like having strangers touch it.

4. Ladies in the retail industry: You don't have to follow me around in stores.  I'm not a thief.  Even though you're supposed to be undercover security guards, it's pretty obvious who you are when you follow me from aisle to aisle.

5.  Don't assume I voted for Obama.  I voted for McCain.

Anyone else care to add to the list:

Wow, I'm white, and its pretty sad if people have actually come up to you and said or done those things!

Pretty ignorant on their behalf!

Don't assume that because I'm white and from a small town that I'm racist.

I wouldn't know.  I don't use the word, but when I find a Black person who does, I'll ask them for you.  ;-)

I don't assume anyone is racist.  Don't assume that just because I'm Black and you're not Black, that I automatically think you are racist.

Don't get scared every time you get around a black person. We all are not the same!

I agree with the don't touch my hair - I have locs and everyone always wants to touch them. I don't like being touched by strangers.

My husband uses the word nigga - when he is talking about his best friend since they were 12 (he's 42 now) as in "he is my nigga" just a term saying tht they are tighter than anything. But that is the only time he uses it.

I don't.
