Worthless Degrees

Do you believe there is a such thing as a worthless college degree? One that has no hopes of EVER getting a job in someones field of study?

I don't think any degree is worthless. A college degree is a college education and generally puts you ahead of us who don't have one, but sometimes I don't get why people would get a degree in a field they can most likely never actually work in. Because while it puts you ahead of those who don't have a degree it puts you below those who have degrees that actually relate to most jobs in the economy...

i think the economy is tought for a lot of people even with a degree.

what degrees are you thinking about that some might never actually work in?

In this economy I see people taking jobs outside of their field as the time. It doesn't matter if you work in your field or not as long as it provides a good living. College is not for everybody but people should get a trade or a skill.

Yes. I do. I also think occupational / vocational training is much better for many people.

They wouldn't be there if they were worthless. But during different periods of time..some degrees are more useful than others. Like right now, jobs in nursing are really hard to get while lots of teachers are needed but also getting laid off. You GWIM?

The only one that I could see as "worthless" is a business major. It's just too generic.
But like you and pp said, a college degree is an college degree.

that is so very true, there are even some places that wont even consider you without a Bachelors , even if you have an associates

I totally agree. . . people with the business depree seem to make a big deal of it, when in reality it seems that everybody in college has it. Also, I agree that a college degree in SOMETHING is better than nothing at all.

There is one in particular. I don't want to say it, bc I don't want to offend anyone. I just was at my desk and two co-workers were talking about how they majored in the same thing and both agreed, looking back, they wished they'd chosen something else...

Honestly, if you live in an area of highly educated people a bachelors doesn't even cut it anymore, you need a masters plus experience.
