It varies for each state. Some states take into account the value of a car, as well as if you own your own home. Generally, you have to be at the poverty level to get qualified.
Each state is different, you can request a hearing for the denial, and then you go to court, and a judge hears the case. You may win, but you may loose.
I was on food stamps back when we needed it, but as soon as my husband got a raise, and we were starting to do really good, we got off them on our own. We didn't need to take any more money from the state. Now that I am pregnant, I won't get back on it. It is not necessary for us. Which feels great for once!

I do understand. My mom is the sole caretaker of my grandmother. She quit her insurance, decent paying job in order to spend more time and keep her safe (moderate to severe alziemersp plus some other serious medical conditions) anyhow, mom had to take another job ...just to pay the meds. so now my grandmother is alone when she really needs full care, but the meds have to be covered, be thankful they take theirs....mine tries to "cut back" to "make them last longer" and gets worse. I do hope that they can get something worked out.
Have you looked into couponing? it is a lot of work but its a great way to spend the same or less amount of money and feed more people. there are couponing groups on here and videos and tutorials all over the web. I started in the summer and have saved thousands on not only food, but also toiletries, medical supplies (band aids, ace bandages, pain heat patches, etc.) and clothes, shoes, electronics, christmas presents...and i dont have a hoard in my basement like the women on the show, i donate extra to families i know in need, or the food bank.
Good luck to you!! God bless you for trying to help them out & hope you can get something figured out!

They dropped their insurance because it was cheaper just going they the pharmacy and using their discount. They are trying to find help with the meds. But transportation is an issue because of the distance :(
Quoting -42-:There may be agencies to help with the medication and transportation issues. Here it's connected with the Health Department.
What about a supplemental insurance to help with the meds?
Have them talk to their doctor...sometimes they will give out samples of certain medications. My mom was in the same boat and her dr. gave her some samples on hers. At one point she was on 15 different medications which cost over $900 a month with insurance and when she was in the "doughnut hole" it was be $1500 a month. She worked with her doctors to cut out some of the meds and with samples it was still high, but it became a little more manageable. My sister's and I helped with the rest of the medication expense.
Be prepared for the run around with prescription assistance. My sister is a paralegal and she even got the run around with pharmaceutical companies...they say they want to help, but they really don't.
