Should smoking in public buildings be illegal?

Just curious to hear everyone's thoughts on this.

I can't think of a downside to it being illegal really, but I'm sure there is. I feel I've seen it debated before but I can't remember the other side

So if you have reasons you feel it should remain legal for people to smoke in public buildings or see downsides to people NOT being allowed to smoke in public buildings, please share.

When I think about it, I feel like people should be able to go into public buildings and not worry about people smoking around them and I can't see a reason it's so bad to expect people to smoke outside. I can see the argument to just stay away from smokers in buildings, but what about places like casinos where it seems that you can't sit down somewhere without a smoker sitting beside you (which always seems to be my experience) and having their smoke waft in your face the whole time. Why should the non smokers have to just stay away rather than the smokers have to be outside?

And please don't take this as an attack. I'm genuinely not trying to assert my feelings as fact. I am actually looking for other opinions and perspectives to see if I still feel this way afterward so that I can fully form my opinion.

There isn't a non smoking section in the casino here unfortunately. I just don't think it's fair that I basically have to opt to stay home if I don't want to be in the smoke rather than be able to go and have a good time like everyone else.

Where I live (Ontario, Canada) smoking in all building is illegal.  In public building - ie malls, hospitals, city owned and operated facilities - you cannot smoke within 5 meters (16.5 ft) of a building entrance as well.  All our bars, restaurants, casinos are all smoke free.  No one ever complains anymore, at first they were afraid they would lose business but if people want to go out they must live by this.

I thought it was already illegal?

I definitely do, and it is where I live.  Its been illegal to smoke in restaurants/ bars since I was a senior in college.  If someone wants to give themselves cancer, go for it, but I don't want to expose myself or my kids to that nasty smoke/ smell.

I was thinking the same thing.  I don't know of too many places in WI, where you can smoke inside.

forgot about that!  lol, I haven't been since I got pregnant with our oldest.

Casinos in my state are exempt to the law since they aren't techincally on state land.

Well now that I think about it, the most I see of people smoking indoors is at casinos or bingo halls :| Why is it not allowed anywhere else, but people can do it there? Sounds weird to me.
