I have stated in several of these crazy peanut butter posts that I would be happy to send something other than pbj in my dds lunch AS LONG AS there is a fridge and microwave provided to properly cool and heat said alternatives. I always get a few snotty replies about how there are soooooooo many alternatives that don't require refrigeration and/or heating, but when I ask for examples I get no response. So BESIDES sunbutter/almond butter(those may be great alternatives for some kids but not for mine) id like to see some peanut butter alternatives that are a strong source of protein, contain little to no carbs(multi/whole grain only), are not prepackaged sodium filled junk, and require no heating and/or cooling. Ready, set, go!!!

*ETA*

So where are all the "awesome alternatives", ladies?  So far the ONLY two alternatuves Ive seen that could actually be used as a source of PROTEIN are hummus and maybe granola, although yodu still have to add nuts to get the protein.

For the moms who asked "why not a turkey sandwich" etc....ANY kind of lunch meat, tuna, etc requires refrigeration.  I do not trust ice packs, as I have ended up with food poisoning more than once-yes even with "insulated lunch boxes and hard shell ice packs".  I will use those for fruits, veggies, gelatin cups, etc, but not for any kind of meat, mayo, cheese, etc.  I simply dont trust them, and I feel that I would be risking my childs health to do so.

So basically, except for hummus and MAYBE granola, there are no real alternatives to pb that are shelf stable and a good source of protein-unless anyone has something to add?

My DD is in a peanut free class, however they have a microwave and fridge.  My dd gets lunch meat sandwiches, leftovers, etc-I have plenty of real, healthy options because there is a means to cool and heat her food properly.  If there wasnt at LEAST a fridge, DD would get PBJ, regardless-because it is my responsibility as a parent to provide MY child with a healthy, nutritious lunch every day, including a good source of protein.  I do not WANT another child to get sick, of course-but I would not risk my childs health nor would I provide her substandard, unbalanced meals-and whether you (general you) like it or not, MY child comes first to me, not anyone elses.

It's chickpeas. It wouldn't need to be refrigerated immediately if you made it yourself.

And if it's in a lunch box you could always add an ice pack to any foods that DO need to be refrigerated.

Could it stand to be left unrefrigerated from 7am-12pm and still be good? I've never had it unrefrigerated

Buy an ice pack and insulated lunch bag. You can pack a sandwich, yogurt, and fresh fruits/veggies.
