Would you rather your preschooler eat your homepacked turkey sandwich or.....???
I came across this and knew I had to share... everyone will feel different, but I'm pretty sure if I packed my child a sandwich that I knew everything about I would rather her eat that than some gross cafeteria processed chicken nuggets.... and the lunch provided is more than my almost 4 year old could ever eat. I personally think it's ridiculous, what do you think?
RAEFORD, N.C. — A Hoke County preschooler was fed chicken nuggets for lunch because a state worker felt that her homemade lunch did not have enough nutritional value, according to a report by the Carolina Journal.
The West Hoke Elementary School student was in her More at Four classroom when a U.S. Department of Agriculture agent who was inspecting lunch boxes decided that her packed lunch — which consisted of a turkey and cheese sandwich, a banana, apple juice and potato chips — “did not meet USDA guidelines,” the Journal reports.
The decision was made under consideration of a regulation put in place by the the Division of Child Development and Early Education at the Department of Health and Human Services, which requires all lunches served in pre-kindergarten programs to meet USDA guidelines.
“When home-packed lunches do not include all of the required items, child care providers must supplement them with the missing ones,” the Journal reports.
The student’s mother told the Journal she received a note from the school about the incident and was charged $1.25 for the cafeteria tray, from which her daughter only ate three chicken nuggets.
The note explained how students who did not bring “healthy lunches” would be offered the missing portions and that parents could be charged for the cost of the cafeteria food, the Journal reports.
The mother, who was not identified in the report, expressed concern about school officials telling her daughter that she wasn’t “packing her lunch box properly.”

That's exactly what I said... I live in NC, it's only been 7 years since I graduated... I've eaten that food and I'm sure it hasn't changed that much. I'd much rather my child eat what I sent... and "inspecting lunchboxes??" is f*in stupid.

How in the blue hell is overly processed, mystery meat cafeteria chicken nuggets more nutritious than a turkey sandwich? I would be livid, the government needs to get their nose out of personal affairs.

I would definitely be at that school... what if the child had some kind of allergy they were unaware of and something happened... anything is possible. This makes me super anxious about sending my daughter to pre-k in August. Definitely gonna be having a talk with the school she'll be going to before anything happens.
I would be livid and escalate the issue. They have no right to feed my child anything I didn't approve first. She's my child, not theirs.
No way in hell is processed chicken nugget "food" better than a homemade turkey sandwich, banana, apple juice, and (yes even) chips from home!
That doesn't make sense to me. Could it be that the mother misunderstood -- maybe her LO was still HUNGRY (or just didn't want her lunch -- chicken nuggets are pretty damn tempting). Not getting how a turkey sandwich & fruit would be considered 'not healthy'. Maybe it was the juice....juice is definitely NOT healthy....
OMG the schools nowadays can't mind their Fing business I swear to GOD ! This is a constant annoyance ... my daughter's school also has rules and regulations about lunches. My daughter LOVES lunchables or whatever they are called (lunch meat, cheese and crackers and a little treat) ... I call them lazy mom lunches (LOL) I let her have one of those about once a month well she got bitched OUT for having one of those last week, she was told by the lunch lady that it wasn't a proper lunch. even though she had 100% fruit juice to drink with it, a ziploc full of fresh cucumbers and a yogurt for dessert... + fruit as a snack.
