i think my dad is jipping me

i gave him my tax info b/c he was gonna have his accountant do it. before i gave it to him though, i did the free estimate thing online and it was a little over $2,500 that i would've gotten back ($1,000 for the child tax- the rest for working since May)...

i gave it to him back in Jan, as soon as i got all my info... i also get money back for paying over $1000 in interest in student loans... BUT! i know i wont be getting as much as i want back b/c i took out my mutual loans (about $5000)- and i know its taxed.

i asked him when he thinks i'd get my return, and he looked at me and asked if i was really expecting one back.

i was. i had plans to pay off my debt (about $500 now), put the deposit/first month's rent into a better (but cheaper!) apartment, and save the rest, or put it towards student loans (i'm fine paying them with my income now- but it'd be nice to get them paid off faster)

did my dad jip me? should i not expect anything back? i'm sad now- i cant even ask him for my stuff back b/c he already gave it to his accountant.

Can you call the accountant and talk to him about it?

Id just ask for my shit back and tell him thanks for the request to help but you feel like doing them yourself this year. IF he knows something about your tax return and is not telling you then thats not cool. And not sure about your state but where I am no one can submit your return without your signiture unless they themselves are doing it online.

1 mom liked this

Call the accountant and get your copy of the tax return.  You should always get a copy.

i dont even have that information. i didnt think i'd need it-- i mean, its my dad and he's never done anything like this before. its usually the opposite- when/if i need help, he's always there to bail me out.

the only thing i know about the accountant, is his first name... and that he's been doing my dad's for 5 yrs now.

i feel like a shithead.

Be an adult and call the accountant. Did the same accountant do your taxes last year? If so, their name is on the return.

You can ask dad or him for it back. You could also go to h & r block and have them redo it

I would be calling my father and asking for the accountants number. I then would explain that you need a copy of your own taxes for your records.... You can also call the IRS and find out what is going on.

How old are you?  Maybe he claimed you and took the deductions thats why you not getting anything back.  Call the accountant and find out.  If he's signing as the preparer his ass is on the line.

I agree with the other posts. Get the accountant's number and get all the info back. Then, learn how to do your return yourself. It is not that complicated to do and it will save you money to learn how to do it yourself, than to pay someone.
