Occupy movement, I'm taking my kids

Since I home school my kids I thought that it would be a great opportunity to show them what it means to take part as a citizen in out country.

Both my kids have strong political leanings and have been asking to go to a demonstration for awhile. Now I think that they know enough to understand my instructions so the lesson plan for tomorrow will consist of the following:

History of Civil Disobedience, protests, and Occupy movement

Packing a bag for the protest.

What riot gear is and why police use and why police aren't safe to go to in a protest

Basic first aid, how to treat pepper spray exposure, what to do if we get separated, and our escape plan

I think this will be a valuable lesson for the boys. Sounds like a full day. Anybody want to come?

Do you take or would you take your kids to a protest?

I hope you hire someone else for spelling lessons.

Thanks for pointing that out. It bugs me when other people don't do a spell check...

How old are they?

I think it could be an excellent learning opportunity provided that safety and caution is impressed upon them before hand.

They are 11 and 12.

I've been strapped for good Social Studies ideas.

Perhaps that could help. There are loads of pages, actually. I googled "lesson plans hands on." I like the idea of making it something that they can do interactively.

Everybody needs to do what works for them I would hate a world where we all did exactly the same thing all day every day!

We all, as parent, try and teach our children the values we hold dear. Trying to help them become a good person. Same goals different approaches.

Pray tell, why wouldn't you do this?

Ignore the language, I've taken allergy medicine and I begin to wax purple prose. Soon I shall be using words like shan't, thou, and quixotic.
