I've got a good friend that has low self esteem and thinks he deserves to be punished and doesn't deserve to be happy and I have no clue how to help him realize that's not right.

He was an alcoholic and not the best husband or father for a year and went into rehab and 7 years later he's sober and a wonderful dad.

He divorced his wife 4 years ago because he realized he married her for all the wrong reasons and 3 years ago I met him and we started dating.

Everything was going great but then she threatened to kill herself if he didn't come back so he did.

I'm past the wanting him back and just want to help him. I talked to him about the reasons he staying and it's basically because he feels he deserves to be punished and doesn't deserve happiness. He's miserable and I want to help but I just don't know what to say to get through to him, any ideas?

Yeah you're right.

It's actually batter wife syndrome only instead of the wife being physically and mentally abused it's the husband.

We still consider each other best friends. I can't just walk away from a good friend.

I'm dating someone else, I've moved on with that aspect of our relationship but I can't turn my back on a friend especially one who's being abused
