How do you feel about this?

How about those who work the night shift? They come home and only get a little nap in before church. They get home and still need to eat and such, etc, before going to bed.

I never said it was the employers fault. However, he never lied about what he wanted as his schedule when filling out his availability. Why should a family man who goes to church work on a Sunday so the hungover college kids can get Sundays off? They literally brag in front of management about how high and drunk they are that Saturday and how they didn't wake up til like 4pm on Sunday.

Quoting Supervane:

So then that's your family's personal preference. That's not An employer's fault

We like this church. It feels like home. The kids have made friends there. It is small. Everyone knows each other. We have already moved and had to start from scratch and none of the other churches fit into what we were seeking. This is the one all 4 of us feel is right for us as individuals and a family. We attend when s/o gets us there or if someone picks us up or we watch service stream live online. It's been awhile since we've gotten to go in person though. I miss it.

Quoting Supervane:

And there is no other church near by with the same practice, to attend before or after work?

Quoting Anonymous:

Our church only has one service on Sundays. There are no extra services. S/Os original availability said no Sundays, and yet they still schedule him. He even listed the reason why. Technically, they are not supposed to say no once you are hired because then it can count as "religious" discrimination

Quoting Supervane:

No because there is more than 1 church service that would not interfere. For example you can go to church before or after work.

Yikes, didn't mean to pee in your cheerios.  I agree that a day off sounds good.  I thought the thread was about reality, about Sundays off for religious reasons.  It was in that spirit (the spirit of discussing an issue) that I responded.  Honestly, meant no offense.

*steps away from the Mommy who needs a day off*

Quoting mom2bell:

oh sorry, miss serious.  people can dream though?  I have 4 kids...sorry if a day off sounds perfect to me!  to perfect to be true....thanks kill joy!

Quoting wissotamum:

Would that include emergency room nurses?  Policemen?  Wait staff in a restaurant (who serve the after-church crowd)? Clergy?  Bus drivers?  Park rangers?  Fire fighters?

All stores should be closed?  Hospital?  Restaurants?  Hotels?  Churches?

That's just crazy talk.

Quoting mom2bell:

i think everyone should get sundays off.

I don't understand.  The OP didn't specify businesses only.  In any event, hospitals are businesses, so are utility companies, etc.

Like I said, I agree with your Mom in that it would be nice if restaurants, malls, and the like closed on Sundays.

Quoting AdellesMom:

Businesses used to be closed on Sundays. She didn't say anything about services like the Police, or Hopsitals. lol

Quoting wissotamum:

I agree that it would be cool if restaurants, malls, and stores closed on Sundays.  Would you think that emergency services (fire, police, hospitals, utility companies, military services, etc) should also be shut down on Sundays?  That seems unsafe.

Quoting AdellesMom:

I think that everyone should get Sundays off. My mom used to tell me that businesses would be closed on Sundays, and people didn't have to work.

It's simple. If, you are hired with the agreement you will not work on a Sunday or Saturday for religious reasons- then you either find a new job or file suit. It would be discrimination for them to not keep their end when they say they will not require that of you. I refused to work jobs that would keep me from practicing my faith.

Either that or I've become incredibly bitter working every other weekend and every other holiday for my entire adult life.  *sigh*

I actually like working Sundays for the most part.  I work in a hospital - I don't have to pay daycare (hubby watches the kids), there are a lot less people around so I can do a lot more patient teaching.  Sometimes it stinks if rest of my family is off doing something fun, but it's part of the deal.
