Stocks, finances, and IRA's?

This is embarrassing. But here goes.

I have a few questions about these things. One how does stock work? What stocks are the best to invest in? How do you go about investing? 

IRA: How do they work? Do you have them?

I will be the first to tell you, I do not know anything about this. I was never taught as a child or growing up. We are becoming financially stable after a lot of hard work and I want to start putting money towards retirement and investing. I want to make sure if anything happens that we can have something to fall back on. 

My grandfather is a big investor and sits on loads of money because he is wise with his money, but he said it "It's not the woman's place to know these things". : /

But I want to know and I am ashamed that I don't. 

So if you have any advice or tips that would be great. I've been considering taking classes on these matters at the local community college.
