Yes I spank. Slap to the face as well if he is being disrespectful, but haven't had to do eithet in a loooong time.

 My DH and I have what is called a blended family. When all our kids began to live together permanently his were 15,13, almost 8, mine were almost 7, 4 and ours 1. The two oldest were grounded and had priveleges taken away or extra chores. The four youngest we did time outs when those stopped working, we went to grounding when that stopped working, we took things away from them when that stopped working, they got a spanking. I would tell them to go to their room and wait I would come in and spank them in a minute. Then I would calm down and not want to spank them but had to because I told them I would and that was their punishment, so they got spanked in a controled fashion. Sometimes I think having to wait to get spanked was worse than getting spanked for them because they didn't know how long they would have to wait. One day I made 2 of them wait for almost an hour, it didn't take me that long to calm down there was a show I wanted to watch and decided that was also part of a good punishment. Each one would wind up having to get spanked 2 or 3 times before we could start the cycle of discipline all over again. It worked out best that way and once all the kids got more and more comfortable with us and each other the discipline became less and less. I preferred not to spank but would if I had to.

"just a reaction" doesn't begin to validate hitting a toddler. You do realize you're supposed to be the parent, not another toddler, right? That's not discipline, that's not parenting, that's being the bigger bully and I suspect a whole lot of spankers might actually agree.

yea cuz ur perfect right? a swat on the butt isnt abuse... my dd loves me, does not fear me, and guess what...has not hit me in the face sense.  

and furthermore....i said i felt bad afterwards. she doesnt get spanked for every naughty thing she does. its a time out, getting a toy put up for a while, etc. so dont make me out to be mommy dearest.... sheesh

Well, let's see. Your toddler hit you. Instead of dealing with it like an adult, your "reaction" was to hit her back. What other word is there? you didn't talk to her, you didn't teach her. You hit her because you were mad. that is appalling. You SHOULD feel bad. and this isn't about whether or not I'm perfect- I'm not. And its not about whether or not it's abuse- its not. It's about your inability to rise above the situation and behave like an ADULT instead of like a child and yes, like a bully. Because when a big person hits someone smaller just because they're mad and they can, there isn't another word for it. Don't like the word? Don't hit your child when you're angry.
