You didn't say 'how's the weather up there?' did you?
It depends. My husband is 6'7", and I find it incredibly rude when people ask him how tall he is. I mean, you can't ask a midget how short they are, or a fat person how much they weigh. But it's okay to ask a tall person their height.
It doesn't usually bother him, unless they go on and on about how tall/big he is.
That's tall, lol

I went to school and dated a guy who was 7 feet tall. It was crazy as I am only 5' 1.5".
We have a tall kid and he is always mistaken for at least a year older than he is. It's VERY annoying. People aren't used to seeing tall people, so when they do they want to ask questions or even just comment. That person probably gets that from every damn person they meet. I would say what you did was insensitive and rude.
These are some of the things I wish I could say to people when they comment on my sons height:
"Two words: Miracle. Grow."
"Have you ever seen The Princess Bride? We stretch him out EVERY night before bed."
"Thank you! We planned for him to be tall so he could play in the NBA and then go on to be president."
"Woah... have you been tested? You are SO smart!"
