Have you ever taken your child to one?
Would you consider it?
Yay or nay?

I couldn't agree more that it's a "disease of inconvenience" - sure there are *rare* cases of complications but that's to be said of almost anything. Example: it's possible to die from child birth but that's no reason to do an elective c-section (which you can also die from lol)

Quoting MeAndTommyLee:

The tetanus was in some cases unavoidable because one of the kids -- still in his stroller was bitten by a dog when my DD was taking him for a walk.  The owner ran off with the dog.   While DH scoured our neighborhood for the dog with her, I took my baby to an emergency care center around the corner from where we live and I was faced with the decision based on the wound and the doctor's advice.  I felt I didn't have a choice because we knew nothing about the health of this animal.  Another of our DS was jumping a friends chain-link fence and stabbed his wrist with a severely rusted piece of metal.  He GOT the shot, too.

The Chicken Pox is and still is very unimportant to me.  The risks far outweigh the disease.  Why? I don't understand the urgency suddenly to vax for it.  It is a disease of inconvenience.  It's unsightly, uncomfortable, but it really is the least troublesome compared with Measles, Mumps etc.  In fact, the I did get the pox as a child and the doctor didn't even want my mother to bring me to his office.  Kids pain reliever/fever reducer and calamine lotion for the sores was all he told her over the phone.  No worries.  They came and went over a 10 day period. Now your dd had a very mild case.  I've seen those before, too.  Then some kids are immune to it, and that I don't have an answer for.lol

Quoting SLOmommy:

Wow, crazy! Tetanus is the only one we're interested in but have yet to find one that isn't mixed (dtap) so we haven't done any. None of my kids have been sick either. DD was exposed to pox when she was 2 and had a total of 3 pox and a low grade fever, that's it! Nothing else at all....

It really is quite interesting. It's not like I'd intentionally expose them but I'm not going to go crazy with dangerous preventative measures either. Some of the ariticles I've read are crazy! Someone just posted the Polio vaccine/AIDS study and that has thrown me for a loop!

Quoting MeAndTommyLee:

With our first baby 22 years ago we were sitting in the Peds office reading a 4 pg disclaimer on how he couldn't be held responsible for her getting sick or DYING after the vax.  We wouldn't sign it.  Therefore, she couldn't get the shots.  The only one everyone has had is tetanus.

Quoting SLOmommy:

None of your 7 kids were vaccinated and none of them caught it? Interesting... Makes me even more grateful for the decisions I've made :)

Quoting MeAndTommyLee:

I never did.  None of my children have had chicken pox.  NOT one of the 7 children.  (And they all have been exposed.) I had them as a kid and it was really a non-critical issue.

Why wouldnt you just vax against chicken pox?

I would never do that to my children, not only is it messed up, but it's dangerous. There are mothers that actually ship their kids chicken pox to other parents to give to their kids and the center for disease control is trying to stop it because it's dangerous.

my parents had them when i was a kid- and recently a kid in my daycare had them. And with the consent and request of the other parents in the day care- the child was brought every day as per usual. 2 have since gotten them, because they are young, it was a couple days of a fever, some spots- a little lotion and good to go.

You are welcome.  We must make an educated decision when it comes to our children.  They are our responsibility.

Quoting SLOmommy:

Thank you.... this was one I had not read. I sent it to my DF to ensure him we're making the right choices when it comes to our baby :)

Quoting startupscafe:

It is your opinion that I am "uneducated."  I won't insult you.  That is not my goal.

I have done research on the subject myself.  And there is a reason that I believe what I said.

Here is a link to a .pdf on the Polio Vaccine:

http://www.thinktwice.com/Polio.pdf

Please go to page 244 and read "Polio Vaccines and AIDS.

Quoting Anonymous:

Once again we have another uneducated person. You don't always gain immunity from having cp. you can get it again! I would much rather never have cp or shingles. I am in my 40's and never had either one.

Quoting startupscafe:

Whether moms realize it or not, every time their children are vaccinated, they are exposed to a potential deadly disease, and many get sick, even contracting those diseases which they are vaccinated for.  For instance, I know someone who received the chickenpox vaccine and got the chickenpox repeatedly until she got the shingles.  The chickenpox parties are simply a way to develop natural lifelong immunity to the chickenpox rather than receiving the vaccine which is not natural.

Quoting marie85:

Why not... willingly expose your child to an illness. OK.

I know why I won't. It is dangerous and I am left with scars on my face from it. Oh yeah and the fact that there is absolutely no good reason to.

Quoting Anonymous:

Why not?

Quoting marie85:

I do not care about whether or not you Vax. Why bring them to a chicken pox party is what I am asking? Its not just according to me... it is known fact. And in those "rare" cases that someone "who never had chicken pox" and claims to get shingles , they more then likely had a very mild case of CP and it went unnoticed.

When the cp vax is given they tell you it may cause a slight case of chicken pox and that is normal-

they also tell you, Even vaccinated there is still a chance that they can get them, it just may lower the severity of it.

Getting cp (naturally or by vax) does not necessarily mean that they never will again, but it will decrease the chance of ever getting it again.

I don't know it I would take my kids to one, but I remember when I was about 5 one of my cousins got the chicken pox and so my aunts, uncles, and my parents threw a bunch of us into a room to play together and we all ended up with the chicken pox. It worked out to our benefit. Because that way we all got them at the same time and it was over within a couple weeks.  Whereas has we not done that we would have been a pretty much endless cycle of miserable children

I got the chicken pox in the 5th grade and inadvertently gave it to my younger brother and all my cousins lol. Their parents were so happy, since we were all kids and there was no vaccine at the time. :-)

My son has had the vaccine.
