I used to volunteer at a food bank for the church i went to the first 16 years of my life my grandpa volunteers there every week and most of my siblings have volunteered there many times but im the only one that ever did on a regular basis until i got a job and couldnt get thursdays off. Its much more than just a food bank they help you find jobs they used to offer clothes but no longer do as far as I know. They also sometimes offer stuff like soap toothpaste sunscreen etc. Well i need food for my family of 4 i get foodstamps but because I cook whole meals (healthy meals) every day the fs doesnt cover a whole month. I very randomly buy snacks but love fresh fruit and veggies for me and my kids. My point is that last week i went up there and they told me that as long as iu called before thursday they could help me out starting this week (tomorrow) but when I called they said that due to high demand they closed even their waiting list. I can call next week and maybe be put on the waiting list but maybe not.

what i doint understand is why they cant get more people in there I knoiw firsthand that they offer alot of perishables (fruits veggies meat milk bread etc) and that they have extras left over every week that usually just gets thrown out. And if i could get those things once a week id be able to feed my family better because as it is 3 weeks into the month we run out of food.

Please dont think im bitching about the fact that they cant help me becayse im not. I dont expect to be treated diff just cause my family volunteers there i just cant believe that they have a waiting list yet stuff is still thrown out or why they hand out more perishables than non perishables. My mom goes there and last week got 3 cans and a shit load of fresh foods. Which is good but it goes bad faster. But they do help hundreds of familys a week so they do good i just think they seem a bit disorganized or something
