How Long?

I know this is likely a dumb question but I've never taken benadryl before. I have a severe mosquito bite. My friend who is a nurse told me to take benadryl for it to get the swelling and the pain to stop. I took it about an hour ago. I'm usually not tired until 3-4 am some times later (i went to bed at 7:30 this morning) but in the last half hour I feel like I've been hit by a freight train. I'm guessing this is a side effect to benadry??

Anyways the bite has yet to go down though. Its terrible looking. The bump is really puffy and sore and all around it is bruised I didn't itch it because the entire time its been so sore not itchy and I know its a mosquito bite I killed the bastard while he was doing his evil business. I've always bad really bad reactions never bruising though.

Anyways I think I'm a little flighty how long would it take for benadryl to make it feel better?

yea thats def a side effect however they have benadryl specifically for bug bites. i have the spray in my baby bag. they also have the stick you rub on the bite. i dont think ive heard of anyone actually taking the liquid form for a bug bite.

Me too. Sadly I can't call my friend she's gone to bed and has several little ones and gets up way too early in the morning to bother. I guess I should just be patient. I'm rather nervous about going to sleep and waking up with it feeling worse though. I hate not having insurance.

Ummm she said take some so I assumed it was the liquid form she was refering to maybe I should have clerafied. Unfortuniately we only have one car so I wouldn't be able to get to the store to get anything else until after 4pm tomorrow. I got it yesterday though I'm hoping its better tomorrow?

chances are it wont be sadly. you need something topical for a bug bite. other things that work well and i know cuz i'm allergic to mosquito bites. i actually catch a fever on them. um caladryl(for the itch and dries it up) and preparation h(brings down the swelling and alleviates the itch)

If you go to sleep, the Benedryl will probably work its magic while you slumber. That's always been my experience anyway.

Rub rubbing alcohol on it, dries it up.

I think benadryl is mostly to take the itch away and maybe some of the swelling. But it is not a pain killer so it will not actually take the pain away. For bug bites the benadryl cream usually works better though and then you dont have to worry about it knocking you out lol. I would think around an hour or so for it to start helping with any itching and swelling though. Usually once the sleepiness has kicked in, then it should be working for the other things also.
