vulva, vulva, vulva ... why do people avoid this word?

My sons refer to their penis as a penis. Some people don't like it, but it's not that big of a deal.

When my daughter was a preschooler and she used the word vulva you could practically hear people cringe.

I still hear women teaching their daughters incorrect language for their body parts. Why would a parent do this? It's not their vagina!

For me, vulva is harder to say, and yes, I did attend speech therapy from K-12, so it's a real issue people. Besides, dd knows what her parts are called, but we use "lady bits" instead.

Idk. The vagina is only the tube, not the whole thing.

No, I get that, but you're not being serious either.

Material presented as it is age appropriate along with the vas defrens and other male junk.

I am only discussing the language in common usage.

Well, if you're gonna go with technicalities...let's pick this gnat's ass and teach it to the kids the right way.

The vulva has many major and minor anatomical structures, including the labia majora, mons pubis, labia minora, clitoris, bulb of vestibule, vulval vestibule, greater and lesser vestibular glands, and the opening of the vagina.

GEEZ!  Some people!

Maybe because it sounds so much like the word vulgar?

If you think that not using the term vulva equates shame and ignorance, than I think you are looking way to deep into it. I am not ashamed of the term vulva, I just dont use it because i wasn't taught to, it really just doesn't matter either way.

Quoting talktojonell:

I don't understand why we would want to teach the next generation the same level of shame, embarrassment and ignorance.

Why perpetuate it?

Quoting krayzbabylove:

This.

Quoting HelloKitty86:

Because growing up, most people are taught to call it their vagina... a penis has different parts too.  Whats the big deal?

I teach correct parts..nothing drives me crazier than people that are uneducated about their parts..it's no wonder there are so many pregnancies while taking BC...

it just says to me that people are stupid when they call anything their vagina that isn't

Which would include vagina, most commonly used for all those things listed by the pp.
