Our neighbors invited hubby and I over for dinner tonight. Hubby has met them both before but I have yet to meet either of them besides waving as we're leaving for work or whatever. They have two kids, a toddler and a newborn. Hubby and I have no kids but are expecting our first. Weve never really been over to anyone's house for a dinner date so I'm a little nervous especially because I have never actually talked to the wife before. We're going over at 5, just wondering what would be an appropriate amount of time to stay so we dont overstay our welcome? It'll be just the four of us plus this young children. Any tips for making it less awkward?
Update: Just got home from dinner. It was so weird!!! Turns out these people are Mormons. Wanted to bless everything and wouldnt accept our gift (bottle of wine). They even pulled out these weird glass jugs of water, felt like they were going to poison us or something. We were really nice and courteous and stayed for two full hours but man I hope we don't have to hang out with them more. They're literally just a few doors down the way from us though so I know that's not the last we'll be seeing them. When we left they said in the future they are going to come knock on our door randomly to see if we want to go for walks or something, yikes....

Normally we have our friends over for dinner so it's weird this time going over to someone we barely know's house..

Until the party dies down. Sometimes its an hour, sometimes its five. Stay about half an hour after you eat dinner and dessert.

What if they're not serving dessert (idk if they are or not..)? I am thinking they invited us over at 5 because of their young children needing to go to bed, I didn't know if we should try to leave by 7 or 8 so they could get the kids to bed?

All the dinner parties I've been to or thrown, the guests and the host just know that it's time to go...just relax and enjoy the experience. I've met some really cool people at dinner parties. Social anxiety, talking to people you don't know, or anything else like that is normal...don't let it ruin your night:) have fun!

Take a gift like a bottle of wine. It should be fun!
