Hey everyone, I currently have one child who is nearly 20 months old. We live in a fairly secluded place which offers a pretty decent amount of land for yard play and walks. We have been considering getting a dog yet completely clueless on the type of breed. I was just curious with some of the dogs you have had or have and how well they are with your child(ren). My grandparents just recently got a little cocker spaniel and she's just the sweetest but I feel like we might want a dog slightly bigger. I mention dog but a cat could also be possible as long as it doesn't interfere with my allergies. I tend to get the burning eyes more often with long hair and a few different types. Any and all advice is greatly appreciated thank you all
Thank you everyone for being so helpful this has really opened my eyes up to all of the different factors and narrowed our search. We are doing some research on both beagles and corgis and I noticed that some places nearby even have a mix breed so if anyone has any experience with that please let me know and if it's bad information please send me a message since many posts have come in and I don't want to miss out on it. I'm still open to hearing about your dogs or cats, let's share those photos! I'll add some of my dog I had before to give you an idea of what I'm used to
This is Mik he's the dog I grew up with. He was an australian kelpie I love this breed so much however my heart is not ready for another one yet.

I have a chihuahua/pomeranian mix and she HATED my son when he was first born, but I think it was a jealousy issue. Now she doesn't particularly like him, but she puts up with him hanging on her and kissing on her. She's about a foot long if that gives you an idea of how small she is. She's definitely a cuddler though. I carry her around like a baby and she lays in my lap whenever she can. She's just not used to little kids. She was 6 when my son was born.
I dont agree with the thing you said about dachshunds at all lol
They are great dogs =]
Quoting waitWHAT:
Beagle. I think dogs 101 (from animal planet) has a website to help narrow down your choices. Google it :)
No weener dogs... They are little shits lol.
We have a chocolate lab/Chesapeak Bay retriever mix. She is good with the cats and is protective of my daughter AND the cats. Labs are good family dogs. They're high energy and will need room to r-u-n!
i have a german shepherd lab mix
and a black lab. they both ROCK
Golden Retriever. Hands down. Easy to train, intelligent and WONDERFUL with children. Our Golden is so great, she runs around the yard with the kids, plays with them and is so loving.

How about a shelter mutt? You can trial run a dog to see if it's OK with your family.
