The State Reacts to "Obamacare" Decision

KTRH Staff

"Obamacare" stands and citizens get a new tax.

The Supreme Court upheld the health care law today in a splintered, complex opinion that appears to give President Obama a major victory.

Texas Governor Rick Perry has said that Texas will go back to court to challenge the states mandatory role in President Obama's health care mandate. Attorney General Greg Abbott responding to the decision says the state isn't done with it's fight to end the mandate and now tax on all Americans.

Gov. Perry released the following statement regarding the U.S. Supreme Court ruling on the federal health care reform bill:

"This ruling will be a stomach punch to the American economy. It is a shocking disappointment to freedom-loving Americans desperate to get our country back on track. Obamacare is bad for the economy, bad for health care, bad for freedom. Americans have made clear their overwhelming opposition to its convoluted, burdensome and overreaching mandates."

Basically. the justices said that while Congress did overreach in part with the individual mandate -- the requirement that most Americans buy health insurance or pay a fine -- the provision is held constitutional as a tax.

Moments after the high court's ruling was announced, Texas congressman and presidential candidate Dr. Ron Paul appeared on the Michael Berry Show to discuss the mandate and how Texas should respond.

U.S. Senator Kay Bailey Hutchison released the following statement on the Supreme Court's decision on the Obama health care law:

"The Supreme Court has declared the health care law constitutional, but that doesn't make it good policy. In fact, the majority said it was not ruling on fairness or wisdom of health care policy, but instead on the power of Congress to levy taxes. The court's ruling confirms the president's health care law is nothing more than a massive tax on the American people."

Chief Justice John Roberts -- a conservative appointed by President George W. Bush -- provided the key vote to preserve the landmark health care law, which figures to be a major issue in Obama's re-election bid against Republican opponent Mitt Romney.

U.S. Sen. John Cornyn, a member of the Senate Judiciary Committee and former Texas Supreme Court Justice, issued the following statement after the Supreme Court issued its decision:

"The Supreme Court made clear today that the American people will be the ultimate judge of ‘ObamaCare.' As Republicans, we will redouble our efforts to repeal this job-killing law. We must replace it with reforms that expand access and enhance care without adding trillions of dollars to the national debt and inserting Washington bureaucrats between Americans and their doctors."

The announcement will have a major impact on the nation's health care system, the actions of both federal and state governments, and the course of the November presidential and congressional elections.
