Your MIL sounds like a piece of work. I wouldn't worry, cps will laugh their butt off.

You still might wanta clean the Microwave though, small splatters and lead to huge fires. I know cause it happened to mine, not fun.

That depends on how dirty it is and if you are continuing to cook dd food in it! Is it at toxic levels - then yeah. 

 place a bowel of water with vinger turn the microwave on to heat -bring to steam levels. This will decrust and help clean the microwave
