what makes a single

Posted by Anonymous   + Show Post
Parent a single parent?

Is not just not being married?
Are you a single parent if you are dating someone who is no the father?
Are you single parent if you are dating the father but not living with him?
Are you a single parent if you are living with someone who is not the father?
Are you a single parent if you live with the father but are not married?

We define single as 1. But when it comes to parenting whats the definiton of a single parent

If you are  unmarried with a child(ren) and live with a S/O you can still CHECK THE SINGLE box on any legal form.

Quoting Anonymous:

Huh

If an so lives with you you're not single but if you don't have primary custody your are? Wtf

Quoting Lydlou02:

This.

If your SO is part of the household then you are not single.

But even if you DON'T have primary custody you're a single parent when the kids are with you.

Quoting cLanief:

I personally think youre a single parent if you live with your kids and not a significant other..

It has nothing to do with if you get cs or they see their dad or you have a non live in bf.

No. anyone who lives with their so is NOT single period.
ETA- except on legal documents.
Quoting Anonymous:

Still lost.

If you have an so you are not a single parent, but only if you have your kids part time?

What changed?

Quoting Lydlou02:

While the kids are in your care.

Quoting Anonymous:

Huh

That's fine.

I personally would still categorize you as a single parent though because even though you are married, you are raising them by yourself. (I would also categorize him as an absentee parent - meaning he isn't involved at all.)

Quoting honeyrder:

Hell, my husband doesn't have a say. He's been barely around their entire lives, and I do not ask for any input from him when I make decisions. They are more my children than his, and I've raised them (to 8 and 10) by myself.

Still, I'm not a single mom.

Quoting Cheryl_M:

I would define a single parent as a parent who either has no support from the other parent or the one who has custodial custody, as they are the one who makes the most decisions that directly effect the child.

The reason I don't count boyfriend/girlfriend in the equation is that if they aren't the child's parent, they really don't have a say.
