Anyone else think we should get rid of tax refunds? ***EDIT***

I mean a flat percentage, not a flat amount.  I didn't know flat tax and flat tax percentage were two separate things.  Everything I've read refers to a flat tax as a set percentage, not dollar amount.

I think we should set up a flat tax and have everyone pay out the exact same thing.  That way it would be fair and no one is paying more just because they're middle class or upper class.  We could save a shit load of money by doing away with refunds.  If we're not paying out three times what people put in we could maybe put a small dent in the debt our country is in. Probably won't happen  because of those who will whine that those who have more should pay more just because but its still a nice thought.

That idea does have merit... and then we don't have to worry about the government taking out so much in taxes during the year...

Oops.  Sorry, I know that happens.  I'm talking about the people who pay in like $2,000 and get back $8,000.  To me that's crap.

I agree it should be more fair. But personally I enjoy getting a lump sum ( although not much of one). It's helps us out alot.

I agree about not having a tax return. I pay my taxes, they are already gone from my check and I don't miss them. Returns just feel like free money every Feb. While I like free money, I would like our country to be financially stable as well.

People who make more money already pay more. *Way* more. The ridiculous "refunds" that are handed out to people who pay little to nothing into the system in the first place need to be discontinued. I'm all for credits that can reduce tax to 0 for the poor and middle class, but that's where it should stop. The maximum "refund" anyone should be able to get is the amount they actually paid in. That said, a flat tax would be more fair across the board.

I could agree with that.  I don't know why its considered right for the government to hand over more money than a person paid in.  The only defense I have seen is "I like my free money" and "I don't make enough to pay for fun stuff so I use my refund to do it" and other things based on wants and to have more money.
