Can anyone tell me about how much I might expect to need to pay for a lawyer. I'm in Arkansas if that helps.

depends on if it's contested or not, or if there are children to consider, or a great deal of marital property.  the more ya'll argue about things,  the more it will cost.  I know when I worked for divorce attorneys, the going rate was $250/hr, with a $5000 retainer up front.  but that was a long time ago, and they were more high end than your average joe.

most attorneys will give you a free consultation, where you can discuss some of the fine points of your case and get a good idea of what they will be able to do to help you and about how much you can expect to pay.

I'm afraid of him fighting for custody, so I want a lawyer.

Mine was 1000 to draw up the papers for an uncontested divorce. If he decided to contest something then it was a 3k retainer and 300 an hour.
