It's not as hard as some folks make it.  Quit doing stupid shit then saying, "Shit happens."  lol.

Thank you. I couldn't agree more. People think it's easy--and it's not. My DF and I are trying desperately to get out of it...we're getting there slowly.

Love this!

Quoting Ashgambit:

That is true. It is doable though. Growing up we couldn't even afford a dining room table...now my mom has her own house, a BMW, just spent thousands on a vacation...all because she worked hard, went back to school, and worked hard. She went from scraping by to making around $120k a year on average.

BUT - it did take time and a great support system. Things didn't get better for us until I was in 7th grade.

People talk about cutting back on stuff....internet, phone, cable, etc, etc. etc....good luck on that when so many jobs any more say, "fill out the application online."  And if said person has no phone, how is a job supposed to call back for that coveted interview?

People talk about getting a better job, more than one job, etc, etc...good luck on that one when there are only so many jobs out there.

Being poor is also a state of mind.  Some people simply think that being poor is a way of life....never having enough...always struggling...etc etc.  It's not easy changing how people think.  Once you change how people think, then their lives will change.

our library here has a 15 minute limit. it's a small library with very little funding so they only have a handful of computers to use. So yes, internet is very important to have when looking for a job. plus it is cheaper than paying a sitter and spending gas money driving around looking for places hiring. You can look to see who is hiring online, fill out an app online, submit resumes, and if they dont have online apps, which is rare, at least you can see they are hiring and go there. driving around from place to place wastes a lot of gas cuz 9 out of 10 of those places aren't hiring.

Quoting melissa632:

This is almost exactly what I was going to say...

Quoting raven1114:

People always say cut the internet, thing is there's a lot of things that are now done online. Things such as school or applications. I bet about 90% of the apps I filled out where done online. Also before you say well go to the library and use their computer not everyone has a library close by and for ones that doi most libraries have a limit on how long you can be on (around 1 hour a day). I'm poor and I have internet. If I drove to town to the library to use theirs it would cost me $10 in gas. Even if I only went once a week that would be $40 a month in gas just to use a computer that I'm limited on. I pay $50 a month and get unlimited access so I can look for work and do my schoolwork.

And seriously you think poor people shouldn't have a phone? So first no internet to apply for jobs then no phone to get a call from a job if they could find a way to apply.. Really how do you see that bettering them?

Quoting Anonymous:

It's not easy. There are, however, actions you can take to get out of that hole.

Try your best to save up money, plan your finances properly/carefully, do without anything you don't need, don't waste money, apply for a better job etc.

Why do you have internet if you're poor? That's the first thing. I don't consider someone that can fully afford internet (or a phone) poor. If you're really concerned, cut your internet and save the excess money up.

Being poor IS hard, and I do sympathize for those who are having financial struggles; but moping about it on the internet will do nothing.

Yes it is, Its called get a better paying job ot more then one job ......

You're rude, and obviously didn't read ANY of the responses. The economy is horrible, in case you haven't noticed. It's not as though someone can think "my job doesn't pay well enough" and just walk across the street and get a new job. I live in a college town where 90% of the jobs are minimum wage. My husband is blessed in comparison to make $9.50, but it's really not enough. My husband also works full time & goes to school full time. Tell me again how he has time for a second job?

I know its rough. Believe me my DH had a job and it just paid the bills. It took him 5 YEARS to finally get on with a good company, makeing GREAT money, But it hasnt always been great for us either, spent a yr and a half on food stamps because DH was out of work........ But if it takes getting 2 mim wage jobs and BOTH ppl working ...... also work your way up in a comapny. Gee put schooling on a back burner, cause thats money going out and NOT coming back in atm. So put it on hold. Why ppl are willing to spend money they dont have is beyond me. If ppl are struggling , barely paying bills, yet gee their putting all this money out for school ..... Light bulb !!!

Stop being fat=save money of food by eating less. I know I am being very mean, but when I see a fat family (not only one member) that is poor, I just wonder if eating a lot is what makes them poor.

Are you someone that has had to lose weight recently???

I know I am....

And you dont SAVE money.

You spend a hell of a lot more.

I changed my diet to where I had more fresh fruits and veggies and I'd leave out of the store every single time with close to a hundred spent ONLY on produce.

That isnt saving anything.

Yeah, I'm the only obese person in my family.  My kids/dh are normal weight.

I actually don't buy junk for me at all.  Just for my dh (who seems to live on that crap).  The only food he eats that is healthy is dinner, lol.

I spend a lot of money on food, and I can tell you this-eating healthy can cost a lot of money.  If we all eat fruits/veggies, and healthy snacks (which we do) we spend much more money on food than I would spend than if I bought junk/processed foods.

Agree, Agree, Agree you can stop being poor if you want. Most don't want it's just an excuse & they can stay on PA that way. You can work your way out of it Trust me I did. The only thing for my family is we were never on PA ever. We just worked really hard to make a living.

Quoting misfitdiva:

Its really hard to stop being poor when you are weighed down with excuses.  If you dont want to be poor, work your ass off.  Its that simple. You may never be rich, but you wont be homeless, foodless (I know, not a work grammer teachers out there), or powerless (and I dont mean electricity)

You can absolutely do this BUT I have also seen jobs online where it says no walk ins...

Quoting ManicAttack:

I know many places still like to see the person that is applying for a job.  It's called pounding the pavement.

Quoting Anonymous:

All cutting phones and internet would do is make it that much harder. No phone, no call back. No internet, no putting in job applications.

We have net on our phones, and while I would LOVE to cut the $107 a month they cost us out, we really do need them
