You can't just stop being poor.

I found my jobs by applying in person and going to the public library. I didn't even have a computer. How are people affording computers if they are "poor"? I paid 10 cents a page for copies of my resume. I rode a BUS around town. When I lived in Phoenix, I spent hours on a bus applying all over the place IN PERSON because I didn't have a computer or internet or fancy phone to do such things.
Quoting kalexer:I disagree, phones and internet are no longer leisure items, they are essential neccessities these days. The expenses on those are not that high either.
Most jobs hunting are now done online and can be done much more efficient, there are also online interviews (Skype) or phone interviews.
Schooling also requires internet for research, news and notifications. People usually do online schools because they can't attend it in person, if they can go to a university to use a computer then might as well just attend the class in person? Online courses are no pinic and usually requires more work than in-person courses.
Although many jobs now days offer Work From Home opportunities, they usually don't pay for your internet or phone bills if you have to call in for meetings.
There is also a large growing number of jobs or money making opportunities are internet based, online business, web development, social media marketing, etc. If a person wants to sell off their belongings to make some extra cash, it is still easier to do it online.
There are also many ways to cut down phone and internet bills. Cutting them entirely off is unrealistic.
Quoting ManicAttack:I don't believe this.
One, if it's a necessity for work, your WORK should be paying for it.
Two, if someone is going to school and taking online classes, they can do so at a university or community college center for free. Also, if they're TRULY poor but they're attending college, they should be getting help from the government to help them pay for the things they need for college.
It's like when people say, "I need this cell phone for work." Your job should be paying for it, then.
Quoting jadedcynic:Some people need the internet for work or school. It isn't a luxury, it's a necessity.
Quoting Anonymous:It's not easy. There are, however, actions you can take to get out of that hole.
Try your best to save up money, plan your finances properly/carefully, do without anything you don't need, don't waste money, apply for a better job etc.
Why do you have internet if you're poor? That's the first thing. I don't consider someone that can fully afford internet (or a phone) poor. If you're really concerned, cut your internet and save the excess money up.
Being poor IS hard, and I do sympathize for those who are having financial struggles; but moping about it on the internet will do nothing.
This isn't true. Just because your company won't talk to anyone upfront, doesn't mean MOST places don't.
I got my job by meeting a manager and giving him my resume in person. If you're truly poor and need a job, I highly doubt you're looking for some kind of executive job- you're looking for something basic. And you can go to a public library to fill out online applications for Walmart, Home Depot, McDonald's, or wherever. If you're truly poor you can't afford a damn computer. You should be selling that shit to pay for your bills.
Been there, done that. I know how being "poor" goes. I didn't have a home phone/cell phone for over a year, and had to give places of employment my parents' phone number or my neighbor's to call me back. So I know what I'm talking about.

Most places now require you to apply online. Where I work we won't even talk to someone until they apply online and get a phone interview from someone in HR.
Quoting ManicAttack:I know many places still like to see the person that is applying for a job. It's called pounding the pavement.

All cutting phones and internet would do is make it that much harder. No phone, no call back. No internet, no putting in job applications.
We have net on our phones, and while I would LOVE to cut the $107 a month they cost us out, we really do need them

Yep, my last three jobs I got from submitting my resume/applications ONLINE, then I would get emails from the employers and had to fill out documents and submit them VIA INTERNET. Seriously, the internet has become a necessity in the home now. "pounding the pavement" is such an old way to go now. Most employers don't have time to come down and meet with people. They want resumes and applications submitted online.
Quoting Piskie:
By cutting off internet, they'd also be cutting off a large proportion of jobs, as many are only online.
Also access to knowledge, support network, information about savings at shops etc.
Internet costs maybe 12 a month. I save an awful lot more than that through deals, information about free events for kids etc.

uh, I wouldn't want to give an employer my mother's phone number. She lives in Florida. I got my job via applying on the internet, submitting my resume with an application. Then they emailed me back with documentation to fill out and send back into them. I HAD to have an email address and send out surveys to my references so they could respond.
I didn't get an executive job, either. I work at the biggest hospital in our area. Most places that are above entry level want applications done online. Even Target, Lowes, Toys R Us, Blockbuster, etc want people to apply ONLINE.

Out of around 50 applications I put in only 2 were paper apps all the rest were done online. I did finally get a job though so yay me! I start next week. It's not much and only pays a little more than min wage but it's something and they will work with my college schedule.
Quoting melissa632:
This is almost exactly what I was going to say...
Quoting raven1114:People always say cut the internet, thing is there's a lot of things that are now done online. Things such as school or applications. I bet about 90% of the apps I filled out where done online. Also before you say well go to the library and use their computer not everyone has a library close by and for ones that doi most libraries have a limit on how long you can be on (around 1 hour a day). I'm poor and I have internet. If I drove to town to the library to use theirs it would cost me $10 in gas. Even if I only went once a week that would be $40 a month in gas just to use a computer that I'm limited on. I pay $50 a month and get unlimited access so I can look for work and do my schoolwork.
And seriously you think poor people shouldn't have a phone? So first no internet to apply for jobs then no phone to get a call from a job if they could find a way to apply.. Really how do you see that bettering them?

It is doable... Just not easy!!! And most would rather complain than change the situation!!!
Nope not easy at all. Read some Dave Ramsey, that man can motivate a rock to move :)
No it doesn't happen over night but you can start fixing things.
