I almost smacked an old man yesterday

We are visiting friends in another city. Last night her parents came over for dinner. My dd was holding her water glass. She sneezed rather violently. The water glass flew out of her hand and was all over the floor. My friends father jumped up, grabbed my dd by the arm and pushed her to the floor to clean up. All before I could react. Luckily my friend told him he was out of like. I was so mad I was shaking.

It wasnt like she threw the water in purpose. It was a total accident. He apologized later. But it still pisses me off. My friend said he never used to do that. But he has been short tempered and doing weird things lately.

I would have thrown him out of my home. That's just me though. I'm sorry if he is crazy or has dementia or something- but touching my child is not ok.

This exact scenario happened to my little brother when he was 3.  Dropped a cup, total accident and my uncle basically threw him to the floor because of it.  I was only 9 and it was 22 years ago, but I remember it like yesterday and it still kind of enrages me.  My uncle had never done anything like that before, but that one thing really made me hate him.  I know these days parents often get a bad rap for not punishing kids enough, but I get VERY frustrated when kids are punished harshly for things that are just normal kid things that they can't really help.

Your friend needs to get her dad to find out why he is like this now before it gets worse or he goes off on the wrong person.

Sorry he did that to your daughter. I know I would have went off on him.

I would've been beyond pissed.  My sil's grandma has been doing things like that but she's going senile...that may be the case for him as well.

I would have knocked his lights out. No one touches my dd, especially over bullshit like that.

On a side note, have you asked your friend if her father has been seen for alzheimer's? I've seen that a lot in the early stages when I was in clinicals.
