She works at a hopspital in medical records. I had my baby at that hospital several months ago. My brother came home from his visit with our dad saying that dad's girlfriend made a comment about my baby having the cord wrapped around his neck when he was born and that he might be "special". No one knew about the cord being wrapped besides the medical staff, me, my DH and my mom. We didn't even tell my brothers or dad or anyone else. That's when I realized that she must have looked up my medical records, that is illegal, it's a HIPPA violation. I called the hospital to talk to someone about it. They checked and they saw that yes, she did look up my records, they said that they will speak with her. I said "if she is not fired, I will file a complaint with HIPPA". If I did that, HIPPA would issue the hospital a MAJOR fine. So my brother just said my dad called and said that she has been fired. Severes her right!!!

I haven't seen my father in 6 years and if I foun out he had his GF snoop I would've had her fired.

If I want someone to know my medical history then I would tell them. I would be livid and I would've called my dad out as well.

I'm in the medical field, I know all about this, I'm just saying I feel bad that family went this far just to find out about their own daughter/grandchild's birth.. I'm not really sure what would be so private in her record she wouldn't want family to know besides a possible STD or having AIDS or something, everything about birth is common & everyone knows what happens during childbirth.

I'm not saying its RIGHT the women did this, but I wouldn't have filed a complaint & demanded she be fired for it, that's all I'm saying. You can tell by all her responses, this has nothing to do with OP feeling like the GF broke into her privacy, she does not like her father & gf & doesn't speak to either of the & this was a way for OP to stick it to them, get her fired, & show whose boss unfortunately.

If this was a random nurse snooped through her shit, told a friend who happened to know OP & and then told OP, I would be livid, in this situation I think it was done to find out about the grandchild. Again, not acceptable, but I wouldn't have called.. but that's me!

Quoting Anonymous:

That's creepy and there could have been very personal info in there that she wouldn't want family to know!

There's no reason at all for her to be snooping through her charts. I learned this the first day of nursing school! Anyone in the medical/health field knows it should not be done for ANY reason! Unless it is a patient under your care.

I think you're overdramatic & sounds like you didn't like her in the first place and found a way to stick it to her. She probably just wanted to see how everything went and so forth.

You are kind of like "family". Yes its illegal, but so are a lot of things.

ETA: I now see you haven't spoke to your dad in over a year, ever think that possibly your father asked her to look so he could know how your birth went & feel involved?

I've worked for 3 major hospital systems.

They always told us at orientation that to look up someone's personal medical history without their permission, request, or the "need to know" could result in immediate dismissal.

HIPAA (not HIPPA like in OP) violations are SERIOUS misgivings in a hospital environment. She shouldn't have done that, no matter her reasons.

She could have been doing that to more folks than just you, and probably was. The hospital probably did the right thing to fire her, because she was potential litigation just waiting to happen.

That's terrible. I don't think you should have done that. Karma, karma, karma....

The fact is that it does not matter at all if she was concerned and just wanted to know. She broke the law. How would ANY of you feel if you found out that someone you know went snooping through your medical records, just to make sure everything is ok? It is private information. She had absolutely no right to do that. And, if she was snooping through the OPs records, who knows if she was snooping through someone else's. She deserved to lose her job.

Yes you did the right thing. I am a teacher and I have had to snitch on a few coteachers ... Also getting them fired, but they broke laws. As professionals, its our job to maintain high standards. If someone cant live up to it, there are other fields for them to work.

How would they know, without asking her, if she looked up the records?

To quote Inigo Montoya from the Princess Bride 'I do notta think that word means what you think it means'.  I think you used a lot of big words to make yourself look cool.

Misgivings means feeling doubtful or wondering if you made the right deicsion.

Also,  your last sentence is redundant. (that means repeating an idea)

Potential means possible...which negates the last part of your sentence.

Passed on that info alone I say u go girl!!! You so did the right thing! My dad has nothing to do with me or my babies bc of his new wife and if she did that I would have done the same. Serves her right! She got what she deserves!

Quoting Anonymous:

I haven't talked to my dad in over a year, she has nothing to do with my child and she knows well that what she did was illegal and it violated my privacy.

Quoting mlg1989:

Well...

Are you gonna fess up to your dad you got her fired?

I don't think she should've done it but getting a potential future step mom fired is kinda fucked up. She might of been dumb to do it but maybe she had serious concerns about your child.
