6 moms liked this

so my 7yr old SD is totally glued to technology. She has her own personal computer and ipod touch she also uses her moms ipad regularly. that's in between all of her t time. i hae an 8yr old DD and I am in no way overprotective but she is not allowed to spend all day on the t by any means. I feel like kids should be kids. they should be playing with their imagination, not having one created for them. Now my DD wants to play a video game all the time and it dries me nuts! do you think it's ok for children that age to be that attached to technology 24/7? honestly i dont see the need for a 7yr old to hae an ipod touch at all or hae her own personal computer that she can go on the Internet with (unsupervised). What are your thoughts?

Overloading kids with technology makes them lazy. The more time they spend facebooking, texting, gaming, etc, the less time they spend being active. Laziness and obesity are two of America's biggest problems. Get them into play groups and sports and activities and LIMIT THE ELECTRONICS unless you want to ruin them.

Buy them iPads, computers, every console available, and one day you'll be turning them away because they've sucked you dry after getting fired from their job for being lazy and leeching off the government. Sound extreme? Try it and tell me I'm wrong in 20 years.

I mean, there's definitely an element of danger, but that's true of almost every situation. We as parents have to teach our kids how to be responsible and live balanced lives. That's not just about technology. So I think that by placing too many restrictions and sheltering our children, we really do a disservice to them. It's important to teach them how to deal with things, rather than hide from them.

Quoting Hyman:

I grew up in the computer generation. But my parents restricted it mostly.

Im thankful for that. I am very computer savvy but it's not my life. I could care less about social networking on Facebook, never got In trouble On chat rooms etc.

IMO its all bad news.

At least keep it away util they're older

Obviously there should be a balance between technology and physical activity, but I'm a strong supporter of technology for children. Technology is our future and when we restrict or "protect" our kids from it, we are doing them a huge disservice in the future. Keep it age appropriate, keep a balance and there's nothing to worry about.

My boys (6 and 8) are glued to a game called Minecraft and their imaginations SOAR. (It's like virtual legos, you can build anything and everything) The 6 year old has even said it makes him want to be a builder (architect I guess :D) when he grows up :)

No, but my 16 months old has an ipod touch,...I spoil her I guess. Its almost always on, but for music. She watches netflix and plays a couple games sometimes, but not often.

Like I said before, I got myself the new one, so I just put her music on the old one. She uses a coloring app, and netflix on it. She spends and hour or less a day on it. But its always in her ihome for music. She loves music and to dance. I would never just go out and buy her one at that age.
