I volunteer at several animal services. Many times we get the calls about an elderly pet and thou they can't keep them due to finances and health issues they are unwilling to be the "bad guy and put the animal out of their misery. Here it is ladies. I give you permission. It is okay. Your pet will not hate you. It is time when they can't handle their bodily functions. PUT THE ANIMAL DOWN it is okay do not let them suffer PLEASE! Don't let their last days be in misery because you've had the pet since 2nd grade. It is your duty to CARE for the pet and that includes knowing when to let them go with grace.
I put one cat down that was a "wild cat" bitch was awful but I loved her dearly...when it came time she sat so patiently in my lap and licked my hand as if to say thank you. Broke my heart
Quoting Jalestra:
I always wonder about people who refuse to put their animals down. They say they just can't "kill" them. I always felt if you love something you can't let it suffer. I've always been the one in my family to make these decisions because I grew up on a farm, so it's easier for me than my husband. It's not my favorite time, but I will not let any creature suffer if I can help it.
Quoting Christy1919:what is your worst vet tech moment?
Quoting wickedfiress:
Agreed. - Vet Tech.
Too many to name!
It's amazing how people don't hold themselves to the standards they set for others.
I agree. Putting them down is MORE HUMANE then dumping them at a shelter in their old age.
That's why one has a medical power of attorney, and have the lawyer draw up detailed papers of what you would want should something ever happen. Like a dnr, only different. I guess don't know how else to put it... but I hope it makes sense.
Quoting Christy1919:
I so agree but the problem would be diminished mental capacity of a human...how does one decide?
Quoting praisinghim2day:
Agreed. Now if we would only allow humans that same dignity :(
Quoting Christy1919:one story? please?

Well, there is the general 'gross' stuff, such as severely engorged anal glands or badly infected wounds that we can't really treat because they've been left to fester too long before seeking treatment. (Such as bite wounds from dog fights.)
But I think maybe, when I lived in Texas.. the cat that had fallen into a patch of cacti and had hundreds of spines all over his body. He was a trooper though, he pulled through and bounced back like nothing happened. Unfortunately this is common in outdoor cats in TX, but I had only one experience with it.

I agree!!!!! I worked for a vet for many years. Please do not let your pets suffer! Putting them out their misery is one of the kindest and most loving gestures you can do.
OP, thank you for posting this!
