What do you think of this? 9-11, Atheists, Christians.

As a non-religious person, I view this as art, albeit Christian in nature. I don't understand how it is offensive to Atheists, as a piece of art. Interesting debate, weigh in.

Yes, anyone can display anything they feel is art. Of course, if it isn't illegal like child porn or anything.

There was a time when Jackson Pollock wasn't viewed as "art".

Quoting TSNDDY:

So lack of definition would be all inclusive and anything anyone feels is art should and could be put on display?

Quoting Anonymous:

Art is tricky to define for me, I can't come up with the exact box to put it in...but, I guess that's my point.

I can feel when something is art. It's all subjective.

Quoting TSNDDY:

How do you decide what isn't art?

How would you define art?

Quoting Anonymous:

Who are you to say what is and what isn't art?

Quoting TSNDDY:

Just because I consider a Tree beautiful and awe inspiring doesn't mean I can put it in a museum and label it as art

Quoting Anonymous:

Your problem is that you are defining art by the dictionary. One will never be able to explain art to someone who is limited by black and white.

Quoting TSNDDY:

art/ärt/

Noun:

The expression or application of human creative skill and imagination, typically in a visual form such as painting or sculpture,...: "the art of the Renaissance"

Works produced by such skill and imagination.

Synonyms:

craft - skill - artifice - science - workmanship - knack

Wikipedia Dictionary.com

Answers.com Merriam-Webster

How is that art?

Quoting Anonymous:

Art is subjective.

Quoting TSNDDY:

It's not art it's a piece of the wreckage. I think it's silly to find such significance in it because pretty much all beams are cross beams..

I'm pretty sure there were 100s of pieces of wreckage that looked like a cross.

I'm pagan and I'm fine with it. It memorializes the loss of life. Its not nessisarily even religious but rather a reminder of what happened there. Kinda like white crosses at a crash site.

I dont see the issue. Its part of the wreckage. If christians want to put more into it than that, who cares? Doesnt affect me at all. I just see it as part of the wreckage from a horrible time. *shrug* I wouldnt call it art though.

Sorry, I wasn't only directing this at you, but for those that also might take it to mean all atheists are like this particular group (as there are still some out there, that read general statements about groups they know little about, and assume that's how they all are).

It was more of a general reply if you will, to clarify, and while yes it should be obvious, to many it isn't..

Quoting Heather_the_Mom:

Whoa... I wasn't it.  When I said "Atheists" I was not referring to all, sorry if you took it that way.  I meant the group who are protesting this.  Which, should be obvious considering it is what the post is about.  Next time I will make sure to put, "some atheists" or "these atheists".

The Atheists and Agnostics I know are not like this, and could care less.

Quoting Heather_the_Mom:

I don't see an issue with it.  And, quite frankly, I don't see why Athiests find it offensive.  If you do not believe in a higher power, why do you care?  No one is trying to inflict their beliefs on you with this cross... Some see it as art, others see it as a sign that God is real, and others just see a hunk of metal... I don't get it.

A SMALL GROUP OF ATHEISTS!! Not all atheists!

In fact a LARGE MAJORITY of atheists do not find it offensive, nor do they have an issue with it..

I wouldn't compare WBC and their hateful protests to the rest of the Christian population, so please don't compare this group to the rest of us.

I would

but when i see it i don't even think of it as a religious symbol. Just a reminder of all the lives stolen from us upon that day. For me it's in honor of them. It still makes my heart hurt to see it though :\

Quoting tessamalk:

I'm an atheist; I don't really care if the cross is there.

But I do have to wonder, would the Christian community be defending the statue if it were a symbol of a different religion, or would they want that removed?

The cross is not only Christian. It was around before Christianity and stands for other things.

Quoting Anonymous:

Would that have made a difference though? They're both symbolic of Christianity.

Quoting Maks1mommy:

It's a metal beam in the shape of a cross... It's not like they put a Jesus statue out there....

It's a memorial, that just so happens to be in the shape of a cross.

It's like atheist groups wanting the Mount Soledad Cross in San Diego to be torn down because it's offensive. It's a freaking war memorial for all the soldiers who's bodies weren't recovered.

Just leave it be.

I often wonder how awesome the World would be if Atheists Christians put their money and resources into something good rather than constantly fighting against something they don't think exists anyway that doesnt have any effect on their own lives?
