Is this rude?

We are going to the water park next Saturday for my son's birthday. We're going at 5 pm cuz it's cheaper close to the end of the day. This isn't his party, that will be family only. We are broke and can't pay for more than ourselves, so I told those that are coming not to bring a present, since they have to pay to get in. Someone said it's still rude because they will have to pay more to get in than they would have for a present, and I'm not providing any food.

FYI, it's $15 per person after 4, $10 after 6, and I included that in case ppl wanted to come at 6 instead of 5.

it is considered poor manners to invite someone to do something and expect them to pay for it.  and Ms. Manners demands that you not ask for gifts in exchange for attendance to a party, and never throw a party with the expectation of gifts, so you might expect some to be upset.

on the other hand, this is what we would do in my family if we were to have an outing aside from the birthday party - but my family would know to expect it by now.

I dont think it is rude. If you arent asking for presents on top of it then its more like you are just getting a group together to go to the park. If any of them think its rude then they dont have to go.

Honestly, I would have picked a diff local and not made people pay. But that's just me. Is there not a neighborhood pool? Or a community pool community could use?

Imo, it is sort of rude because it is a tough situation to put people in. Kids believe it or not do get disappointed not getting gifts.

Just my two cents.

It is weird your not providing food for your sons party. If you are really that broke then dont have a party at a water park. Do it at home or a public park where you can bring food and cake like normal people do.

Yes that person who said that about the gift costing less is rude. You did not invite all these people after all,you simply pointed out if they wanted to join you they had to pay to get in.You even told them not to bring a gift.Case closed.Happy Bday to your son!
