If you are a pitbull owner, and have babies, toddlers or small kids in your home. This question is for you.

Before I start, I want to say that I'm not bashing you, or your dog. This is just my curiosity and I want to know. I mean no offense by asking at all.

If you do feel offended, then instead of getting defensive, maybe use this as a chance to educate. I will not argue, because that was not my intention when I posted this.....

It seems as though ( for the most part) that pitbull owners feel very confident that their pit will not harm their child, or anyone in their family ( household). That being said, we all know that no one can predict anything. So my question is this, what if? What if the un-thinkable DID happen? What if for some reason, one day, without warning, your pit tore into your child, or loved one? How would you re-act, what would you do? What would you say?

Also, would you ever own another pit?

Please explain why to your answers..

again, I mean no  ill will, or hatefullness in this question, I'm seriously curious.

Edit:

I'm asking about pits, because they have locking jaws, and typically their 'attacks' result in death or serious injury.

Please, if you can't answer what my post is asking, then please don't post in here at all. I'm not bashing pits, or any dog for that manner.

I'm just wanting the info I posted about, nothing else.

If you post anything other then what my post is about, I will report your post and have it removed. This is not a post meant for bashing or arguing about other dogs ect.... Thanks!

All of my dogs when they come into my house are socialized well around people (adults and children), dogs and expose them to many differant situations.  If one of my dogs did snap or bite my daughter or went after someone else. I would have the dog checked by the vet and have a friend of mine who is a behavorist come out and evaluate them.

Several years ago, one of my dogs who is NOT a pit bull, went after a 10 year old boy. I was mortified at first because Beau had never done anything like this before. But then I took a step back and looked at the situation. This boy approached my daughter in a way that Beau felt he was a threat and to be honest there was something off about that kid. We were camping and whenever this kid came around I put Beau but there were a few times when I did not hear the boy coming and he would antagonize my dog before I was able to get to my dog. The dad told us later that the boy had been bitten by 5 differant dogs.  When we got home I had blood work done and did what I had to, to make sure that Beau was not starting to have some issue. He has not done anything like that again but I do watch Beau because he is a dog that is very intuned to me and my emotions as well as a person's body language.

But I will say this dogs do not do things without warning. they do give us signals but people miss them because they do not understand dog behavior or dog language. That day my dog went after that boy I saw it coming and grabbed his coller before he lunged and was able to stop it before anything happened.  Dogs also read our body language but they interpret it into doggie language and sometimes that is when there are problems because the dog thought they were being threatened or somthing along those lines.

ANY dog could snap and attack a child. ANY dog.

What if that happened with your lab? (For example). Pits by nature have little to NO human aggression.

I honestly don't know. I NEVER leave my kids alone with our dog, or any dog - no matter what breed, size, or age - and I always supervise them very closely when they interact. I'm trying to teach them to read dog body language (basically, anything other than perky ears and a waggy tail = he's not happy right now, please don't bother him!) but they're young, so I still only really let them interact when I'm holding the kid.

If an accident DID happen, I would still own another pit bull some day.

My pit is very well socialized and recognizes who is the dominant one of our "pack". He is very well disciplined and although he is stubborn, he never disobeys an order. We know his bloodline and have been his only owners since he was a pup properly weaned from his mother. I've trained him completely.

With that said, if the unthinkable ever did happen, he would most certainly be out of this house without a second thought. Though my kids are never alone with my dogs and are taught to treat them with respect. They play with him but they have boundaries. My dog knows if he has had enough just to walk away to his safe place that the kids can't get to- through the baby gate.

Would it change my mind about the breed? No. Would I get another pit in my life? Yes.

Honestly, many dogs are just as likely to turn on their owner or a child, not just pit bulls. No one should own a dog if they don't have the time or patience to properly trin and socialize their dog.

I do not own a pit, but work with dogs.

My dog is a rescue and the vet said she's part Pit, part Collie (can't be 100% sure unless I DNA test her).  She has facial features similar to a Pit, but that's it.  I have to say, she is the sweetest, most loving animal I have ever met.  But when that doorbell rings, her bark would scare the crap out of anyone.  She's never exhibited ANY aggression (well, she ate a toad once), and I doubt she ever will.  But nothing in life is guaranteed, I guess.  Right now she's asleep on my legs with her stuffed cow between her paws, snoring.

Any dog can snap, pits are not aggressive dogs by nature. They are TAUGHT to be vicious.
