It really is super duper easy.

Pour the cream into the mixer bowl (Here's a photo of my 12yod).

Turn mixer on level 4, or a very easy but not super slow pace. I started out with our wisk attachment.

After about 5 to 8 minutes, it turned into whipped cream. And then after another 5 minutes, it turned to this:

The buttermilk began to pull away from the butter curds. I had to switch to the paddle attachment because the curds kept getting stuck inside the middle of the wisk. Then I used a sieve to drain all of the buttermilk out of the butter curds. Directions said to rinse in cold water, but I didn't see the need to? I also did not add any salt or herbs this time. EDIT:  I was just informed by a fellow butter maker that because I didn't rinse my butter in cold water as the directions stated, it may mold quicker if I don't use it up within a week.

Here is the final product. One ceramic cup just has the curds, and the other ceramic cup my daughter smoothed the butter out nice and pretty.

Easy peasy!

*I put the separated buttercream milk into a container and placed in the fridge.  I'll use that buttermilk to make pancakes with this weekend.

If you don't have a mixer like mine, you can also use your blender...or you can use a large glass pickle jar (with lid securely on) and shake the heavy cream for 20 minutes or so.

Or you can spend $155 for one of these:

or if you're really into making butter, you can use one of these super-duty butter makers:

Fresh butter is soooo good! Once, in school, we put cream into baby food jars and shook them until we made butter. I've got to make some butter now.

Thanks!  It really does taste very rich and creamy.

Homemade butter is super easy to make. But you have to "wash" the butter with ice water afterwards, otherwise your butter will mold fairly quickly.

I've been trying to make my own foods now for several years, to get away from all of the hormones in regular milk products or all of the pesticides/chemicals found in most grocery-store items.

I'm going to make mayonnaise next...and then homemade crackers/bread.

Silly question maybe, but what do you do with the curds?

I did see that in the directions, but I thought, "Huh, butter looks like it should now, so I'm not going to wash it."

Guess I'll keep it in the fridge so it won't mold so easily.
