A question for lesbians

How do you prefer to be greeted?

I'm a server and I just had 3 lesbians come in and I greeted them by saying, "Hi ladies, how are y'all doing tonight?!"
They acted pretty offended, with one even getting kind of pissed off, rudely saying, "Do I look like a damn lady to you?"
I apologized, although I'm not sure what for.
I don't want to offend anyone, and I sure hate getting stiffed over it.
