My husband and I were teen parents. We have always had our own place and been on our own but we have had to rely on government assistance in the form of healthcare since day 1. My husband has the chance to get a promotion. He would have to go away for training but the pay will be higher then what he gets now.
I know this is a horrible way to think but we honestly have to consider it because making more money could add more stress because I don't know if a few dollar raise would be enough to off set the cost of health insurance that we would need to have, the co-pays, and any deductable and percentage that we're responsible for after the fact.
I am afraid of losing our health insurance through the state and not being able to pay for it with our own money. If we lose that, then we're going to be worse off then we are now. I know some people say to do whatever it takes to get off and we want to be off and we're working towards that, but I don't want to put my family at risk either if we can't afford to pay for health care and my kids get sick and can't be seen. We already have the cheapest of everything. We don't have cable. We do have internet but I take online classes and need a reliable internet connection at home. We do have one cell phone that we also need for emergencies, but it's the lowest prepaid plan available. We are as frugal as we know how to be already.
I know some people will bash me, that is okay. I really need to do what is right for my family. I can't just let them not have health insurance and I don't want to go into debt either. We want to make our lives better.
Will the insurance be through his employer?
He can get insurance through his employer. We don't know how much though and he is going to look into it. I should also explain that we're common law marriage which isn't recognized by insurance so I would need private insurance I believe unless we were to get married for real.

Get married and find out how much the family plan will cost.

I understand. My kids have had insurance through the state for awhile. I only had it while I was pregnant; otherwise, I went years without any insurance. DH had some through work. When he got this new job and they offered an insurance plan where I could be added, we jumped at the chance, lol. But I was scared of how we'd pay for it. We made allowances and it works, but it is difficult. I can't wait until we get the kids off of state ins and add them to DH's plan. Hopefully next year.

When we had our first son my husband made $13/hr. We paid our own insurance and it was crappy. It cost us $1200 out of pocket to have our son. We struggled and never lived off government assistance. We didn't have more kids until he got a better job with higher pay. I don't have sympathy. You chose your own luck.
