Will someone please explain to me how people can't survive on a full time $9 an hour job? My mom managed 3 kids on roughly that and everyone else I know makes minimum wage and don't even get full time and they survive and are able to put money in savings. So what are you wasting your money on that you can't SURVIVE without?

I would just like to say sarcasm does not survive in the internet. I was. making fun of all the posters who are so flabbergasted at families surviving off of $12 an hour and not taking into account location and all that.
Here it is very possible to survive on $9 an hour and not need any type of assistance (this was before medical was required. I have no idea what that type of insurance costs around here) and be able to have some wants in life.
Cost of living has not changed around here much since I was teen since that was 5-6 years ago and my mom survived on 8.40 an hour with 3 teens. (I did have a job from the time I turned 13 so I bought my own clothes )

5 moms liked this
Your mom didn't pay nearly $4/gal in gasoline. Your mom didn't pay $1.50 for the cheap bread. Your mom didn't pay $800/mo in health insurance premiums plus copayments.
People can talk all day long about inflation not going up, but check out your local gas station for proof otherwise.

You are so right. A house is not a need!!! Oh and we don't want to live on $9 an hour. We both made that at 18, we are much older, have more experience and education. We want more for our family.

Thank you for getting the point of my post.

They have to have brand name clothes, big screen tv, best phone, a car with a payment. Their wants come before their needs.

You must live somewhere cheap. I grew up somewhere cheap so I can understand where you're coming from to an extent.
But... there's a whole lot of world out there beyond what you personally know and have experienced. Where I live, you'd be living on the street at $9 an hour full time. So stop thinking you know it all because you clearly don't.

I was agreeing with you.
Quoting Anonymous:I don't know if you read this correctly but my point was that it's not enough to live off of.
Quoting lovinglife0682:Quoting Anonymous:I don't know if you've ever heard of inflation but I'm guessing $9/hr was a lot more sustainable when your mom was raising you. (comparable to 12 or more now)True. But we still could not nor would we want to raise our family on that.

9 dollars an hour when your mom was raising kids was good money. My husband makes 10 an hour and we don't even make it without his parents helping out some months.

Our rent for a tiny three bedroom house is $2300/month and that's a GREAT deal for this house because we're renting from friends. So no, we wouldn't survive on $9/hour.
