I told her that daddy was going to go help some people who needed his help. I told her that he would be living away for a while but we would get to talk to him sometimes and we would get to see him sometime on the computer. She learned about Iraq and eventually started telling everyone that he was going to the beach for a while so he could be a big helper. Then we made a calander to count down the days til daddy came home. Mine was only 4 when dh left.
That he was going away for Army work. We got a wall map and I showed them how far the United States was from whatever country he was in at the time. My 5 year old son had it in his head that Daddy was fighting dragons in volcanos to keep us safe from bad guys. He used to tell everyone that, it was really cute.
My older kids knew where dh was going and that it was part of his job. ds2 (who turned 3 while he was gone) was told that daddy was at far away work. He'd tell me that. Skype was a lifesaver. The first time he left ds2 was like 18mo and thought daddy lived in the computer.
