what kind of dumb spelling test is this?

Posted by Anonymous   + Show Post
My kids first spelling test was today. Back in my day our teacher said the word, used it in a sentence then said it again. We had until the third time she said it to write the word.

Well ds's spelling test is as follows:
Circle the correct spelling of the word.

That's it. They have all the words on a paper with a bunch of other misspelled words and they had to choose the rightly spelled one.

Of course, he got them all right. But how in the world is THAT a spelling test?

This is not considered multiple choice.

It's not.  It's a recognition test.

I would be alright with that if the traditional spelling test was used in addition to that format. I can see how recognizing the proper spelling is just as important as being able to produce the proper spelling. If that is the only format used, though, I would be really unhappy.

Regardless, as always, I am so happy to be homeschooling, ha! There are no school practices that I can disagree with unless I want to have a parent-teacher conference with myself :)

just wait, in middle school they don't teach spelling at all.... I was told that with auto correct and the lack of spelling on the standardized test makes it obsolete in teaching at that level. So I'm "homeschooling" spelling while sending him to public, too. Fun,fun!

Testing in a variety of ways allows students to learn in a variety of ways.

I'm in Oklahoma and my daughter doesn't get spelling test like that.
I'm surprised they are doing it that way with the new core standards.

Interesting. I will give a test like that as a modified version for my at risk learners ( iep students). To have that be the norm is strange.

I think it's just teachers making it easier to grade.
