Should parents on welfare be forced to volunteer?

I am watching my neighbors kids (age 2 and 3) because she gets financial assistance from the county and she needs to volunteer or she will lose her benefits. She is expected to look for work or volunteer a minimum of 35 hours a week. She does her best and we (and others) try to help her with childcare, but is this too much to expect from a single parent? I mean they only give her $575 a month.

I don't know. I do know it's not technically volunteering if you're forced/have no choice  in the matter.

Absolutely. If she had a job who would care for her children.

It is a way to keep people from collecting while not doing anything.

I don't like the idea of forcing people to do anything.

Forced volunteering. Well, there's the oxymoron of the day!

I like this idea of volunteering to receive benefits.

35 hours a week for 575 a month? And no help with child care? How is that going to improve her situation?
