I wouldn't if I had a daughter. I doubt my son will keep a diary.

Yes, I'm sure I will. Teenagers are generally very sneaky and don't tell their parents EVERYTHING. I feel it's our jobs as the parent to know what your children are doing. If that is the way to find out so be it. I won't feel great about doing it but I will.

This Exactly... it makes it hard to trust people seriously. I have this fear of constantly being snooped on. And they didn't stop being intrusive with the room and diary either. I had to give my kids what I call "the run down " talk. If Mawmaw and pawpaw start asking questions tell them ask your mom. They will glean the kids of any information they can get and it makes me want to be secretive.

Quoting Anonymous:

I know that my parents did, they took everything to the extreme. They were VERY abusive in every way and once a day they went through my room. I don't mean nicely, they trashed my room and went through EVERYTHING. I'm not going to lie, I have issues as an adult from it. IF I suspected that my teen was in harms way, I might. BUT I wouldn't let her know that I was reading it. There would be no punishing her every day for putting a swear word in her diary, that is just ludacris. I would figure out a way to help her without letting her know that I completely and totally disrespected her and violated her privacy/trust.

Do teens even keep diaries anymore? I thought they shared everything on FB.

by Mrs. Tennant on Oct. 13, 2012 at 11:39 AM

No, I would not. Unless I suspected something serious was going on.

Privacy is something I value

Only If I thought she was a danger to herself or others.
Or that she was being abused by someone.

I can see NO there valid reason to violate my DD trust in such a personal way.

I would for shits and giggles, but I'd never hold any of it against my kids.
