Is regular grocery store cheese safe to eat if you are vegetarian?

If you're vegetarian, any cheese is fine. If you're vegan, I'd stay away from it.

Depends on why you are vegetarian. Are you a moral vegetarian or a health vegetarian?

Many are. Offhand I can tell you that Cabot cheese is made with vegetable rennet. Trader joes has a number of vegetarian cheese, they're mostly clearly labelled plus they have an information sheet available. I haven't purchased cheese in a long time so I'm not really up on all the safe brands nowadays.

It should say vegetarian cheese on it if it doesn't have rennet.

Because my roommate is vegetarian for religious beliefs. He doesn't want animals harmed for food. He's a lacto vegetarian. So I warned him that cheese in the us contains rennet but was unsure which brands.

Here is a pretty complete list of vegetarian-safe cheeses: http://cheese.joyousliving.com/CheeseListBrand.aspx
