Well, scientist used to think it was the implementation of tools but have since learned that other, far more primitive species, implemented very simple, yet effective tools.
Right now, what separates humans from all other species, aside from our advanced cognitive abilities, is nothing more than what separates every other species: an inability to reproduce outside our own species.
