Well, scientist used to think it was the implementation of tools but have since learned that other, far more primitive species, implemented very simple, yet effective tools.
Right now, what separates humans from all other species, aside from our advanced cognitive abilities, is nothing more than what separates every other species: an inability to reproduce outside our own species.

Not much because in some ways we are like pretty much every animal.
Religion would be a good one though.

We also share 99% of our DNA with a banana, if I recall correctly.
