They don't know how to treat animals properly at that age :-/
a stuffed animal.
We were going to get a fish, but ended up getting a bearded dragon. The neighbors had some they needed to get rid of, and we figured it was more interesting than a fish. She won't be able to play with it without supervision, but they are quiet, don't smell, super easy to take care of (as long as you don't mind that you have to feed them crickets--not as gross as it sounds). Ours is super friendly. He loves to snuggle up on my shirt and take a nap.
A rock. Seriously, its a bad idea to get a pet for a child at that age just because you think she's lonely. She's too young to care for it properly and its not fair to the animal.
