Why wouldn't a mother quit smoking when she got pregnant?

Its not a life or death thing.  My niece smoked through all 5 of her pregnancies and kids were just fine.

I have no idea why a mother wouldn't stop smoking when she found out she was pregnant.  Some people just think differently.  I never started smoking, drinking or doing drugs....so, I never had to worry about that.

 I don't get it either, I think it's the ultimate in selfishness and ranks up there with alcohol and drug use during pregnancy.

I understand there is a chance of nothing happening. but there is a bigger chance of something bad happening to the baby.  The child also gets older, what about 18 years of second-hand smoke?
